Fixing your vacuum cleaner’s loss of suction at home

Someday, your favorite vacuum cleaner might stop working and lose its suction power. Do not worry too much! Losing suction power is a very common issue with home cleaning appliances, even if you are using the best vacuum brand. However, there are some simple things we can suggest you try in order to solve this problem. Read on!

What happens when a vacuum cleaner loses suction power?

When suction power is lost, there could be many reasons. When this happens, your vacuum cleaner will stop picking up dirt and sometimes even stop working totally. The common areas will be affected, including the hose, the bag, the rollers, the vacuum belt, or even the gasket. The different reasons could be as follows:

  • The brush bar is tangled by dust, pet hair, and your hair.

  • Filters don’t work anymore. They are clogged and stop filtering function, leaking the bad odors and smells into the air.

  • The dust container is overflowed and blocks the airways.

4 steps to unblock the suction problems and maintain the lifespan of suction power

#1 Check and clean the forehead and/or brush bar

Not all vacuum cleaners have a brush bar. If your vacuum does have it, check to see whether it is tangled with hair, pet hair, fibers, and other specks of dust. Those items will block the bar’s operation and stop your vacuum from doing its job. If your family members have long hair, as well as your pets, do the check more regularly because they will tangle the brush bar more easily.

In case there is no brush bar in your vacuum, check the air pathways and the areas around the edge of the tool. Remove any dust, hair, and debris so the air pathways will be clear.

Depending on the model of yours, carefully remove the brush bar, pull out hair by hand, or clean it following the product’s instructions.

#2 The filters: clean them

The most advanced technology (for example, Dyson products) can maintain suction power because there is no filter in their products. However, not all of us can afford that cutting-edge technology.

There are 2 kinds of filters in a regular vacuum cleaner:

  • Motor filter: generally around the back of the vacuum cleaner, and near the area of emission from the machine

  • Allergen filter: usually near the dust container in a bagless vacuum cleaner or the bag in a bagged one

Check it regularly – at least once a month. Depending on the type of filters, you can clean them properly one way or another: self-cleaning filters, washable filters, and replaceable filters.

#3: Check and replace bagged vacuum cleaners’ bags or empty the dust containers of bagless ones

The method varies on the type of vacuum cleaner: bagged or bagless.

For a bagless vacuum cleaner, ideally wash it after use, especially when the capacity of the dust container is relatively smaller. However, do not let the canister fill up to over ¾ its capacity. Otherwise, you will find that it does not clean properly.

For the bagged version, it costs a small amount of replacement periodically. The full bag is the main reason behind the loss of suction. Check and empty it first whenever you face this problem.

#4 Check the hose and the tube and clean if necessary

The hose and tube are the sources of your problem when all the above steps are completed, but you cannot find any clue. An accumulation of dust and dirt will slow or stop the airflows and decrease the working power of the hose. Look inside the tube; be sure to separate it from the vacuum’s body for spotting obstructions more easily.
